Old Boy in the News

Our Old Collegians have been in the spotlight recently, including:

  • Jakob Baric (SPC 2008-2013) is urging Old Boys to lend support to his campaign to secure a $32,000 community grant for the Australian Youth Band. Jakob is a volunteer and performer in the Australian Youth Band (AYB), a not-for-profit internationally touring marching and concert band, based in Ashwood, Melbourne. Jakob has been in the band for six years - starting during Year 10 at St Patrick's College. The band is currently in the running for a $32,000 community grant from Carlisle Homes. The competition closes at the end of this month and Jakob says the band would love to win the grant and use the money for a new and complete set of marching uniforms, including jackets, hats, pants, and shoes. The grant competition operates via Facebook with a voting system that directs a person to the Carlisle Homes Community Grant Facebook at this link. From here, enthusiasts of AYB can show their support by clicking a button similar to the "like" button Facebook has to support AYB. “By the end of September our aim is to show how large of a community truly supports our cause as a professional marching band, and hope to have the highest count of the contestants (we're currently in the lead),” says Jakob. By the way, Carlisle Homes does not collect any personal information when people vote and the voting process does not take people to an external link from Facebook. So show your support for an Old Boy and help Jakob secure this community grant!

  • Chris Jones (SPC 1988-93) is planning to bring a second movie theatre to Delacombe next year. Read about his plans at this link

  • Old Boy Paul Tudorovic (1983-88) was in the news recently – for all the wrong reasons – when his young son decided to play Picasso with the paints in his bedroom. Have a chuckle at every parent’s worst nightmare in this story at this link

  • Old Boys may be interested in an inspiring story on our very own Howard Clark, long-time staff member, College First XVIII Football coach and all-round awesome educator who, each and every day, helps raise fine boys to the status of great men at St Patrick’s. Howard’s incredible life’s journey is detailed in the latest edition of the Ballarat Lifestyle Magazine. The story was written by Old Boy Peter Howley (SPC 1963-66).

  • John Schreenan (SPC 1982-83) is also featured in the latest edition of the Ballarat Lifestyle Magazine, detailing his success in the printing industry with his business, Revolution Print.

  • Mathematician Brendan Harding (SPC 2001-06) visited St Patrick's this term to share his knowledge with current students. Brendan graduated from ANU this year with a PhD in Mathematics. Many students, especially those considering tertiary study in maths, caught up with Brendan to learn about his study pathway beyond St Patrick's.

  • Congratulations to four Old Collegians - Brad Crouch (SPC 2006-11), Matt Crouch (SPC 2008-13), Martin Gleeson (SPC 2012) and Liam Duggan (SPC 2009-14) - who have been named in the AFLPA squad of the best young players under the age of 22. Well done gentlemen! For more, go to this link Congratulations also to Brad Crouch who has signed a new four-year deal with the Adelaide Crows.

  • Well done to our three Old Boys, Melbourne’s Oscar McDonald (SPC 2011-13), GWS Giants’ Jacob Hopper (SPC 2014-15) and Richmond’s Daniel Rioli (SPC 2012-15), who were in contention for the NAB Rising Star Award, which was won by Sydney’s Callum Mills.

  • Great news earlier in the season for Oscar McDonald and his brother Tom McDonald (SPC 2010) - both signing new two year contract extensions with Melbourne. Well done gents!

  • Great to see another Old Collegian starring on the national stage. Congratulations goes to rising star Callum Linnane (SPC 2008), one of just six young dancers nominated for the country’s most prestigious ballet prize, the Telstra Ballet Dancer Award. To view the Australia Ballet’s video series featuring Linnane and vote in the People’s Choice Award, visit telstra.com.au/TBDA To read more about Callum’s journey, go to this link

  • Not content with merely competing at five Olympics Old Collegian and College Legend Anthony Edwards (SPC 1985-90) ventured to Rio de Janeiro along with his wife and children for a holiday as a spectator at the Olympic Games. While there the man affectionately known as “Eddy” took in all the highlights including the rowing (of course) and was also in the main stadium on the night Usain Bolt won the 100m sprint. Anthony also took some time to out to feature in this interview with ABC TV which can be found at this link

  • Congratulations to Matt Short (SPC 2008-13) who was elevated to the role of captain of the Australian Cricket National Performance Squad in mid August for the remainder of the series currently underway in Townsville against Australia A, South Africa A and India A. Matt's promotion came after an unfortunate injury to bowler Sean Abbott. This is a fantastic opportunity for Matt to truly show his leadership credentials against some of the best first class cricketers from around the world. Well done Matt! To read more, go to this link

  • Congratulations to the Ballarat Rugby Club, featuring many SPC Old Boys, for winning the Victorian Club Rugby Div 2 premiership with an 18-13 victory over Melton.

  • Congratulations to Old Collegian Jesse Palmer (SPC 2013-14) who made his AFL debut for Port Adelaide. Jesse became the 111th Old Boy to play footy at the highest level.

  • Joseph McKee (SPC 2005-2010) graduated with distinctions in Master of Engineering at Melbourne University in August, 2016.
