News around the Boarding Precinct

  • Four weeks of Term 4 are already gone and if you blinked you would be astounded at how much you may have missed. What an amazing first few weeks we have had here in Boarding.

With over 150 guests, supporters, friends and boarders in attendance, we celebrated the official opening and blessing of the Boarding Precinct on Sunday, October 21. The day proved to be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our incredible new -‘home’ and to have our current boarders conduct tours for the many parents, generous donors, Old Collegians and members of the wider College and Ballarat communities. Once again, one of the many highlights of the event was the Indigenous smoking ceremony, led by local Wathaurong women, Tammy and Deanne Gilson, held in the Old Collegians’ courtyard, shadowed by our impressive Precinct.

  • The celebrations continued well into the evening on Sunday, October 21 as we concluded the day with the annual Year 12 Boarders’ Farewell Mass and Dinner. In front of over 170 family and friends, we were able to acknowledge our year 12 Boarders who are entering the final stages of their life as SPC students. This was a memorable occasion, a highlight of our calendar each year, which saw the outgoing Captain of Boarding, James Richardson, make his final speech to the Boarding cohort, while also welcoming incoming Captain of Boarding, Josh Wilson-Stanton to the microphone for his first official address. It was a special night of celebrations, memories and stories, one which we are all privileged to be a part of.

  • On Thursday, October 18, members of the Applied Learning Program were celebrated for their outstanding achievements made throughout the year. A number of Boarders were recognised on the night, including current year 11 student, Kayne Councillor who was awarded the Touchstones Trophy, and Elijah Kelly (11), awarded the Skill Development Award. Both these awards were given to acknowledge both Kayne’s and Elijah’s significant, positive contribution to the Applied Learning Program in 2018.

  • More congratulations but this time for three of our Year 12 students who recently displayed their work as part of the Systems Engineering and Product Design and Technology showcase. Lou White produced an electronic opening silo chute, Dylan Casey worked tirelessly to create a rotisserie, while James Richardson produced an amazing retro style cabinet. We are so proud of all of the students and the work that they constructed throughout the year. The skills of our Boarders know no limits.

  • Massive congratulations (and a sigh of relief for some) to our Yr12 Boarders and the entire year 12 cohort who officially completed their final year on Wednesday, October 24. Their time at the College was celebrated throughout the day, starting with a cooked breakfast and an afternoon of reminiscing over photos and videos. The day concluded with a beautiful, Thanksgiving Mass at St Patrick’s College Cathedral, which saw the cohort perform in front of family, friends and staff. We are very proud of how the Boarders conducted themselves at this time and the preparation they have put in for their final exams. We wish them all well as the first exams get underway this week.

  • On Tuesday, October 16, the 2018 SPC Basketball Presentation Dinner was held. This was a wonderful occasion where many of our Boarders were recognised for their commitment to the basketball program. Ethan McMasters (12), Max Daunt (12) and Cooper Atchison (11) were all acknowledged for being members of the successful First V team while the following Boarders won individual awards:

Hudson Hair (10) -“ Intermediate Coaches Award

Mitch Hobbs (11) -“ Senior Coaches Award -“ SPC Gold

Lou Paul (11) -“ Senior MVP -“ SPC Gold

Well done to all of our Boarders that participated throughout the basketball season.
