Where are they now – Fr Gerard Dowling OAM

The College recently reconnected with Fr Gerard Dowling OAM (SPC 1949-50) who celebrates this year the huge milestone of reaching 45 years on air as the regular host on the RSN 927 AM ever Sunday from 10pm to 12am called The Family Counsellor. The Family Counsellor is the longest running show of its kind; established in a time before 24 hour services such as Lifeline.

Where has life taken you since leaving SPC?

I have been an ordained priest since July 27, 1958. I served as assistant at Burwood and Altona between 1959-61 and completed Social studies at the University Melbourne in 1963.

I joined Catholic Care in 1963 and broadcast on the Sunday night 10pm talkback program and- am still presenting. I was also Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne- between 1999-2003.

What are your fondest memories of your time at St Patrick’s College?

The wonderful spirit and friendliness. I enjoyed working on Lake Wendouree.

Which teacher from your time at SPC had the greatest impact on you? Why?

Bro Linus Kelty, a totally committed History teacher. Success in modern and Greek and Roman history. He got me through Matriculation and he demanded perfection.

How has your education shaped your professional life?

The affirmations of my faith and my commitment to learning have contributed to my profession as a priest.

How has your time at SPC shaped your personal values and your family life?

My development as a rounded Christian person, who cared about others especially under the resident Chaplin Fr Leo Fiscalini.
