Old Boys in the News – July 2025

Our Old Boys have been busy recently, including –

Great to see Damien Sheehan (SPC 1976-81), pictured above, was guest speaker at a recent Ballarat Legacy lunch. Damien is viticulturalist and general manager at Mount Langi Ghiran winery at Bayindeen, near Buangor. Damien’s father was John James Sheehan (SPC 1925-1932), who served during World War II, came home and helped raise funds for the SPC Memorial Chapel and became the Labor member for Ballarat during the turbulent years of politics in the 1950s.

Lake Wendouree captain Joel O’Connell (SPC 2013-18) was hoping for his first win of the season to coincide with the club’s 30th anniversary since the 1995 merger between junior club YCW and CHFL club Wendouree last weekend. Ben Reus (SPC 1989-94) also returned to help with training. To read more, click here

Great to see Jamie McPherson (SPC 1993-96, PY1998) showing our Indigenous students around the Victorian Institute of Sport in Melbourne recently.

Congratulations to Chris Packer (SPC 1978-83) and his business Chris Packer & Associates which was a finalist at the Australian Accounting Awards recently.

It was great to see Ben Mornane (SPC 2017-22) showing Year 12 students around Newman College in the lead-up to a regional Catholic schools forum dinner recently.

Will battle-weary Bungaree senior coach Ryan Waight (SPC 1998-2003) coach again next year in the Central Highlands FL, make your own judgment after reading Ryan’s comments in this story here

Meanwhile, Rokewood-Corindhap skipper Matt Aikman (SPC 2013-18) was holding his breath after suffering a potentially serious knee knock against Newlyn, read here and here

In good news in the country, Dean sheep farmer Danny Maher (SPC 1994-99) celebrated a record lamb price recently after a securing a price of $28 a head for his 102 second-cross Poll Dorset lambs at the Ballarat sheep sale in late June. The price set a Victorian record and was the third highest price secured for lambs nationally. Read what Danny had to say about all the fuss in this story here

Redan’s Rudie Forde’s (SPC 2018-23) rising star as a ruck is in the spotlight in this story here

Great to see Jesse Palmer’s (SPC 2013-14) return to footy in the local region with Skipton in the Central Highlands FL after a three-year stint on Port Adelaide’s senior list and successful spells across all of Australia’s major state leagues. Read more here and here and here

Michael Whitehead (SPC 1968-71) is facing a Herculean task, as part of a local community group, trying to retain the former Neil Street Uniting Church as a performing space, read the story here

Riley Polkinghorne (SPC 2014-19), who has been making his mark this season at VFL club Port Melbourne, returned to North Ballarat recently to help his home club find some of their best form to win over Sebastopol. Read more here

Mount Mercer sheep producer Denis Banks (SPC 1977, PY1979) and his son Nick (SPC 2006-11) express hope in this story here after rain in mid June sparked hopes after battling the dry for over two years. Denis, who has been keeping rainfall records on the property for 75 years, described how his farm had only received a third of the average in the last 12 months.

Congratulations to Steven Chircop (SPC 1998-2001, PY2003), pictured above, who notched up game number 600 for the Forest Rangers Soccer Club recently. Steven is a long-serving stalwart of Wendouree’s Ballarat District Soccer Association outfit, read more here

Simon Ward (SPC 2001-06) continues to raise awareness of a group no one wants to be in, as part of the rapidly growing number of Australians aged under 50 diagnosed with bowel cancer, read Simon’s advice here

 

James Zentveld.

Congratulations also to James Zentveld (SPC 2015-2020) who won gold at the Ballarat-hosted Australian Powerlifting League – after successfully lifting a whopping 300kg deadlift, 160kg bench and personal-best 275kg in the squat – shattering his own record by 25kg! Read more here

Well done to Cooper Sherman (SPC 2017-22) who is through to the World Championships in Tokyo later this year after great races at the World Athletics Relays in China in mid-May. Read more here
