Newsies wows audiences

Henry Gilbert and George Rogers were impressive as Crutchie and Jack Kelly in our production of Newsies: The Broadway Musical.

In a dazzling display of talent, teamwork and tenacity, students from St Patrick’s College and Loreto College brought the streets of 1899 New York to life in their 2025 musical production of Newsies.

Performed over three days to enthusiastic audiences, the show was a resounding success and a proud showcase of the College’s and students’ incredible commitment to the arts.

Set against the backdrop of the Newsboys’ Strike, Newsies follows the story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic young leader—played by Year 10 student George Rogers—who rallies his fellow “Newsies” to stand up against powerful publishers. With high-energy choreography, powerful vocals and a deeply resonant message of justice and solidarity, the production captured the hearts of all who attended.

The collaboration between St Pat’s and Loreto exemplified the spirit of community and creativity. From the backstage crew, costume and set designers to the on-stage performers, every student played a vital role in bringing the story to life.

Director Monique Allen praised the cast and crew for their dedication.

“To say I’m proud of the cast and crew of Newsies would be an understatement. I am overjoyed at the way in which students from St Pat’s and Loreto came together to create such a fantastic show and I hope the memories they made last a lifetime,” Ms Allen said.

“To see our Performing Arts Centre foyer packed after every show with joyful audience members celebrating our cast and crew was just so rewarding. Each and every show was a triumph by the cast and crew, and I hope that they are as proud as I am of their efforts.”

Principal Steven O’Connor echoed her sentiments.

“It is hard to find the words to describe just how good and entertaining Newsies is. I attended the opening night and was so engaged and entertained by every element of the production,” he said.

“The standard of ‘Newsies’ was exceptional. It was such an energetic, entertaining and engaging production. It is so encouraging to see the standard of performance lift in the show yet again and to see how much the cast were enjoying themselves.”

Special thanks go to the production team, staff, and volunteers who supported the show behind the scenes, as well as to families and community members whose enthusiasm filled the theatre each night.
