Meet our 2025 College Dux: Reuben Hackwill

Acting Principal Ms Carol Roberts with 2025 College Dux Reuben Hackwill.

Reuben Hackwill is no stranger to accolades.

Since beginning his St Patrick’s College journey in Year 7 back in 2020, he has collected an impressive list of honours – from Chris Nolan and Principal Excellence Awards to multiple Subject Dux and Year Level Dux recognitions.

In 2025, the talented clarinet player served as Music Captain, earning both the Dorothy Irene Ellis Scholarship and the Band Executive Award for Dedication and Commitment. And this week he was named College Dux of 2025, after achieving an outstanding ATAR of 97.4.

Yet, despite these extraordinary achievements, Reuben remains humble and unassuming. He admits he was genuinely surprised to be named College Dux and says his most treasured memories are not the awards, but the friendships, connections and shared experiences that have shaped his time at St Pat’s.

In the following Q&A, Reuben reflects on his journey, the lessons he’s learned, and what lies ahead.

What does it mean to you personally to be named College Dux?

It was an unexpected honour, which I am proud of.

What subjects did you study? What subject did you enjoy most, and why?

Last year in 2024 I studied Unit 3/4 Business and Accounting. This year, in Year 12, I studied English, Physics, Specialist Maths and Maths Methods. I really enjoy studying and the challenge of learning new things so I actually didn’t have a favourite class.

What study habits or routines helped you most throughout Year 12?

I used a variety of study techniques last year. I found cue cards really helpful. I would highly recommend asking a lot of questions while in class and making really good use of the teachers and the Year 12 tutors (ex-year 12 students employed in the Study Centre) because I found these people really helpful. Additionally, if you find it hard to focus at home I would recommend using the St Pat’s Study Centre/Library or the public library as a resource because these spaces have an excellent learning atmosphere.

What was the biggest challenge you faced this year, and how did you overcome it?

During Year 12 I really struggled with the nerves before tests and exams. To try and overcome this anxiety I tried to change my mind set to focus on how much I’d improved from the start of the year and being proud of the effort I put in, instead of worrying about scores and comparing myself to other people.

How did your co-curricular activities influence your Year 12 experience?

During Year 12 I participated in the SPC Stage Band and Symphonic Winds. This extra activity included experiences I will never forget like for example performing at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, and marching in the ANZAC day parade. I will remember these opportunities with fond memories, and they enriched my experience at school.

What advice would you give to future Year 12 students?

I found that I really enjoyed Year 12 and that while stressful, the year flew by really quickly. So my advice to any Year 12 student is to appreciate their time; taking moments to smell the roses, and appreciate the scale of the upcoming year.

What are your plans for 2026 and beyond? Is there a particular career or field you’re passionate about pursuing?

Next year I plan to study for a Bachelor of Science in Melbourne. I am doing this course because it gives me the chance to look around at a really broad range of subjects so I can figure out what area I would like to pursue in the future.

Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you along your journey?

I would like to thank mum and dad for sending me to St Pat’s, where I had so many opportunities to meet and work with a lot of great people. I would also like to thank every one of my teachers who all went above and beyond in supporting me to do my best throughout school.  Also, I’d like to thank the tutors in the Year 12 study centre, they were really helpful. Lastly, I’d like to thank the wider school community, from the administration team, support people, parents, leadership and everyone behind the scenes…all working to create such a positive environment to learn.

What will you remember most about your time at St Pat’s?

I will always remember the amazing opportunities that the school gave me socially and academically, and the connections I was able to form.

Closing comments from Acting Principal Ms Carol Roberts:

Reuben achieved an outstanding ATAR of 97.40, which will enable Reuben to achieve his dream of studying Science at the University of Melbourne. Reuben’s results are a testament to his hard work, exceptional effort, and quiet sense of determination that have been the hallmark of his approach throughout his time as a student at St Patrick’s College. As a College, we congratulate Reuben on this exceptional achievement.
