Highly respected and long-serving racing steward Henry Brewer (SPC 1974-78) passed away on 28 March 2026 at the age of 64 following a battle with illness.

A memorial service was held at the Mudgegonga Hall on 11 April, which was attended by some of Henry’s former classmates.

Former classmates Ian Krelle, Joe Kealy, Des Heagney, Laurie Colbert, Clive Coogan, Gerard Unthank & Mark Meade remember Henry at his memorial.

In flowing tributes, Henry was remembered as a valuable member of Racing Victoria’s Stewards department for the best part of 40 years serving as a Deputy Steward.

He was described as “an astute steward for many years within the industry, always good for a chat, (who would) be missed by many clubs in Victoria racing”.

Henry began his stewarding journey in April 1987 under the tutelage of Northern Chair, Terry O’Brien, during the period in which Pat Lalor was the Victorian Chairman of Stewards.
Henry would become a mainstay of race meetings and jump-outs throughout north east Victoria with his signature look of rolled-up sleeves as he administered the Rules of Racing in a firm, but fair manner.

He was described as a “true gentleman whose knowledge and experience was second to none” by a work colleague.
Whether at Dederang races or Wangaratta jump-outs, Henry was fondly remembered for always being available for a chat or to provide valuable integrity advice to participants or colleagues.

Henry was also a valued community member within the area of Mudgegonga, north east of Myrtleford, in northeast Victoria, where he served on the local council for many years whilst also tending to the Hereford cattle on his 300-acre farm.

Henry was a boarder at SPC from Mudgegonga and was a talented student from his time in Form 2 through to Form 6.

He received numerous academic awards throughout his schooling, receiving a Newman residential scholarship on leaving SPC.

He showed talent playing the violin, speaking French through the Alliance Francaise, and played numerous sports, including football, cricket and basketball, through his years at SPC.

We extend our sincere condolences to Henry’s family, friends and colleagues on his passing.
