We were saddened to hear of the passing of James (Jim) Derum (SPC 1965-67) on 31 July 2025, aged 76 years, peacefully and with great dignity after a short illness.
Jim was the beloved son of Jean and John (Jack) Derum (SPC 1925-26) (both dec), and the much-loved brother of Michael and John.
Tributes spoke of Jim being a “loyal friend to many” and a “kind, compassionate, humorous, fun-loving person”.
A former classmate spoke of the happy memories with Jim as fellow students and through the years – “Jim was always a positive person, and had the ability to always welcome me with open arms, and give me that little lift”.
Jim was a full-time boarder from the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. He followed in his father’s footsteps.
Jim was fully involved in College life at SPC and was a College Prefect in 1967.
He started at SPC in Form 5 in 1965 and repeated his matriculation in 1967. He was a member of the Sodality executive and secretary of the Senior Literary and Debating Society in 1967.
He was also a keen tennis player and a valued member of the Second Four, as well as a quick runner and regular prize winner as part of the SPC Athletics Team.
After graduating from SPC, Jim completed an economics and politics degree at Monash University.
