We were saddened to hear of the passing of James (Jim) Hewitt (SPC 1943-48) who passed away on 23 May 2025, aged 93 years.
Jim was a boarder at SPC for six years, and of curious note, was born in one of the houses on the SPC grounds.
Jim began his studies at St Patrick’s in First Year. He was a talented scholar and was on the scholastic prize list in 1944 and also received the Special Christian Doctrine (second behind the Dux) in his sub-intermediate year in 1946.
He was part of the St Rochs footy premiership side, senior shed side for Nunan, Under 15 side and a member of the Second XVIII Football team. He was also listed for his relay and weight putt achievements in the 1947 College Annual.

After completing his Leaving studies, Jim worked in administration before heading to the Melbourne Teachers College, where he graduated and began teaching across country Victoria.
He met his future wife Loreto while on his teaching post in Edenhope and together they had five children.
Jim became a principal in the public system in Victoria, before switching to the Catholic system in South Australia. He became the assistant director of Education at the Port Pirie Diocese, later becoming the first lay director of the Port Pirie Diocese of Catholic Education, until his retirement.
He and Loreto retired to Gawler, in South Australia, where they enjoyed playing golf. Loreto sadly passed away in 2022. We extend our deepest condolences to Jim’s children and their extended families.
