John E Cleary (SPC 1964-70)

We were saddened to hear of the passing of John E Cleary (SPC 1964-70) on 7 July 2025. John was a day student at SPC, arriving from St Patrick’s Primary in Drummond Street.

He graduated in Form 6 in 1970 and enjoyed playing football and cricket. John was also a talented and experienced baritone in the College brass band.

Our deepest condolences to John’s wife Merilyn and children Tim, Ange and Melissa and their extended families.

John’s funeral was held on 14 July 2025 at the William Sheahan Chapel in Drysdale, Victoria.

Moving tributes spoke of John as a “true gentleman” who was affectionately known as “MacGyver” because “there was nothing he couldn’t fix”.

He was remembered for his “boundless patience and ingenuity” who was a “beacon of integrity and good humor”.

John was also remembered fondly as an “absolute legend” by the members of St Leonards Golf Club.
