Martin Vissers (SPC 1959-64, PY65)

Martin Joseph Philip Vissers (SPC 1959-64, PY65) sadly passed away on 16 June 2025.

Martin was a day student from First Year through to his Leaving studies. He was talented in junior athletics, cricket and especially football, and was a member of the winning Nunan House premiership team in the Park Competition in his first year, as well as the Under 13 XVIII.

Martin was a member of the SPC Under 13 XVIII football team in his First Year in 1959.

Martin later operated a fruit business in Wendouree.

We extend our sympathy to Martin’s wife Carol and children Carol (dec), Aaron, Kara and Damien and Warren and grandfather of seven, and extended family.

Martin was remembered for his “determination, resilience and stubborn streak, generous heart and … mischievous always-up-to-something cheeky grin”.

Martin was a member of the newly-established Kosciuszko junior team.

He was remembered fondly for his absolute love of soccer. He was a junior member of the newly-established Kosciuszko Soccer Club, established by the Ballarat Polish Association (operating between 1955-1990) at their home ground at Victoria Park in Ballarat.

Martin was a member of the winning Henderson Shield team in 1963 at Trekardo Park.

Later, Martin became a founding member of the Ballarat City Football Club and a founding member of the inaugural 1968 team to play in the Melbourne metropolitan league. Playing as a left winger, he was a vital member of the team scoring 11 goals and setting up many more. That team went on to win the club’s first championship and earned promotion that year.

Martin played over 200 games for the club but was also a dedicated club man following the conclusion of his playing days, serving multiple roles across 50-plus years of service.

His footy club mates remember Martin as “typically stubborn right to the end, (who) will be greatly missed. The legacy that Martin has left, along with the Vissers family cannot be measured”.
