Old Collegian’s “Allsorts” hit road again to crush cancer

February 23, 2022

A group of Old Boys led by Jim Waight (SPC 1985-1990) are determined to make a positive contribution to cancer research. The Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts Cycling Team are once again participating in The Murray to Moyne Cycling Relay on 2 and 3 April 2022 to raise funds for cancer research at The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).

Old Boys on the team alongside Jim include Matthew Sheehan (SPC 1988-93), Mark Verberne (SPC 1991-96), Isaac Manley (SPC 1996-2001), Jed Manley (SPC 1994-99), Scott Petrie (SPC 1994-99), Chris Whitefield (SPC 1996-2001) and team manager Damian Waight (SPC 1989-94).

The event commences at three starting points along The Murray River – Mildura, Swan Hill and Echuca and travels 520km to Port Fairy taking just over 24 hours. The Allsorts are departing from Swan Hill.

Last year, with the support of the college community The Allsorts raised over $60,000 for cancer research at the only regional cancer research facility in Australia – FECRI Ballarat.

This year’s fundraising goal is $35,000. This will enable the team to sponsor one PhD Research scholarship at the Institute.

In 2019, Jim was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. During 2020, he had chemotherapy as part of his treatment and went into remission. At the moment, Jim continues to enjoy remission and is currently receiving immunotherapy as part of his treatment plan.

“We are stoked to be hitting the road again and to be fighting cancer on two wheels. Our goal is $35,000, which is achievable, especially with the ongoing ramifications of the pandemic and the effects on many businesses. These funds will make a real difference to unlocking the mystery of cancer. Our team is most grateful for the ongoing support of the SPC community,” Jim said.

The team’s 2022 launch is proudly taking place at the College’s Old Collegians Pavilion on Friday, 4 March, 2022. The master of ceremonies for the night is Old Collegian Chris Henderson (SPC 1986-91).

The launch is about celebrating hope and that a positive outcome can come from a difficult situation. The Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts look forward to sharing their 2022 story with the college community.
