Fr Anthony (Tony) McCarthy (SPC 1954-57, PY1958) sadly passed away in Bupa Aged Care, Kyneton, Victoria on 10 June 2024, aged 85 years.
Tony was a boarder from Trentham, starting in sub-intermediate class in 1954.

He showed his sense of community and faith from an early age with his involvement in the College’s St Peter’s Junior Seminary, Sodality of Our Lady and St Vincent de Paul Society groups. He also dipped in his toe in sport and was a member of the 1957 Galvin House premiership team in the Oval Football competition.

After completing his Leaving studies, Tony began formation for missionary priesthood with St Columban’s Mission Society. He entered St Columban’s Seminary in Sassafras, Melbourne in 1958 and was ordained at St Patrick’s Cathedral, in Melbourne on 25 July 1964. In the following year Tony was appointed to the Philippines and the diocese of Ozamis.

After language studies, he ministered in many villages in the area, travelling for the most part on horseback. Apart from many years in the Philippines, Tony also took his turn in fundraising and promotion work for the Columbans and in parish ministry in several dioceses in Australia.
