Parent Cyber Safety Information

While usually a great tool for communicating, the sad events of Christchurch highlighted the speed and negative impact that social media can have in distributing harmful content. When using the College network most social media sites are not available to students, however at home this is generally not the case. Highly respected child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg recommends that for parents to be able to provide the best the support for their children in the safe and responsible use of technology it is important parents understand the types of technology their children are using.

In order to be familiar with the ever-changing landscape of social media and gaming apps students are likely to use a valuable resource is the Office of the eSafety Commissioners website, and in particular the guide to games, apps and social networking:

This is an excellent resource that gives a summary of all the most popular social media websites and apps and provides in depth information and FAQ’s for each site and app. It also provides information on how to report any offensive or illegal content found on these platforms.
