John (Max) McEvoy.

We were notified of the passing of John (Max) McEvoy (SPC 1941-43) in July 2023.

His funeral was held on 18 July 2023 in Eltham.

He was remembered by his family as having lived his life well and “with empathy and appreciation for others and your environment”.
Max was a boarder at SPC from Mildura and a member of the undefeated SPC XVIII Football premiership team in the Ballarat Public Schools’ Competition in 1941. He was described as “very reliable in back-pocket. Although he was not brilliant in the air, he played cleverly on the ground”.

His family paid tribute to Max who fought for his country in World War II and “always stood up for what was right”.

He was remembered as “a fine educator”, a school principal at Olympic Village and Whittlesea Primary School and “admired by many”.

He was also remembered for looking after his family, despite his own loss, following the passing of his only son Tony.

“A fine and fair man  – they broke the mould”.
