The Power of Reading

On Monday October 19, 2015 three KRC team members went to hear one of the world’s authorities on reading, Professor Stephen Krashen a linguist and educational researcher specialising in language acquisition. Throughout his entertaining and engaging presentation, Krashen made the case for one method of language acquisition and literacy development over another.

In short, Krashen advocates for free voluntary reading of material that is of interest to students.

He commented that -Reading for meaning, reading about things that matter to us, is the cause of literate language development.”

Countless research shows that the more you read, the more proficient you become at reading thus allowing you to access more complex works. – The best way we can support a student’s literacy development is to provide him with access to books about subjects that really interest him and allocate time for him to read. -‹

The KRC has an extensive collection of books, both print, electronic and audio suited to the interests of teenage boys.

As another great advocate for reading, Dr Seuss, says -The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.-

Please encourage your son to read so he can learn and grow through stories.
