South Street -“ ACU Debating Challenge

The Royal South Street ACU Debating Challenge concluded on Monday night with the students of St Patrick’s College having a great deal of success.

Our Year 10 team consisting of Oscar Grigg, Xavier O’Shea and Ryan Mulheron were victorious in the Final of the Year 9/10 section against Loreto College in a very high standard debate while our Year 12 team featuring James Parini, David O’Doherty and Liam O’Shea narrowly lost to Ballarat & Clarendon College in the Year 11/12 Final.

Further to this, in the Year 7/8 section Max Wakefield was awarded Best Male Speaker while Elijah Cross was the Runner Up for this award. In the Year 9/10 section, Matthew Duffy was awarded Best Male Speaker and in the Year 11/12 section, Liam O’Shea was also awarded Best Male Speaker.

Congratulations to all of the boys on their achievements.

South Street -“ Speech and Drama Competitions

After a highly successful opening week of the Speech and Drama competitions at South Street, the boys of St Patrick’s College continued to have great success in the second week.

Liam O’Shea won the Year 11/12 Prepared Speech competition while Oscar Grigg was awarded Third Place in the Year 9/10 Impromptu Speech section.

In the 15 Years and Over Improvisation section known as -Death In A Minute-, three St Patrick’s College teams managed to earn awards including Highly Commended, Third Place and First Place. Congratulations to Daniel Hillman, Brayden Ward, Will Lovison, Emerson Tolliday, James Wait, James Meagher and Callum Hofler for their performances in this category.

In the 15 Years and Over Acting In Pairs section, James Meagher and James Wait gave an impressive performance of a scene from Oscar Wilde’s -The Importance of Being Earnest- to earn a Highly Commended award while Daniel Hillman and Darcy Cargeeg came in Second Place for their performance of a duologue from -The Glass Menagerie- by Tennessee Williams.

Well done to all of the boys who participated in these competitions.

DAV Debating

On Wednesday August 17, the Year 10 debating team competed in the first playoff round of the DAV Finals and were victorious against Xavier College. They will now go on to compete in the Octo Finals on September 7. All the best to the Year 12 team who are competing in the third playoff round next Wednesday night against McKinnon Secondary College.

Purton and Breach Oratory

The Purton and Breach Oratories are being held in the Spring Board Room on Thursday September 8 from 6:00pm. The night will provide an opportunity to hear speeches from some of the College’s best speakers. More details regarding this event will be published on the SPC Friends of Performing Arts Facebook page in the coming days.

2016 Performing Arts Dinner

Tickets are now available for the Performing Arts Dinner which is being held in the Pavilion on Tuesday September 13 at 7:00pm. The evening will provide an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the boys throughout the year in Music, Drama, Public Speaking and Debating.

Tickets are $25 per person which includes a two course meal and can be purchased at https://www.trybooking.com/MSLU until Wednesday September 7. This was a very highly attended event last year and it is recommended that you book early as there are a limited number of tickets available.

2017 Combined College Production

The audition information packs for our 2017 Combined College Production of -West Side Story- will be distributed towards the end of this term with auditions to be held early in Term 4.

West Side Story takes the story of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transports it to modern-day New York City, as two idealistic young lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
