Senior School Report – August 11, 2016

August 10, 2016

During the school holidays, year 11 student Charlie Pollard took part in Warrnambool Cheese and Butter’s six-day Adrian Meade Dairy Innovation Program, along with eleven other students selected by interview from around WCB’s milk supply region.

The program started at the WCB factory looking at milk processing, the product range, quality assurance, transport and logistics processes. This was followed by a four-day tour of the supply chain looking at dairy farms; talking with those who provide services to the farmers and manufacturing sector; seeing the logistics of producing, storing, moving and delivering products to customers; finding out about how retail and international sales are managed; and seeing export processes in action at the Port of Melbourne.

Students also visited Marcus Oldham Agricultural College and Melbourne University’s Agriculture and Veterinary Faculty to look at courses available. A visit to Dairy Australia in Melbourne also showed students how the organisation markets dairy products to consumers and raises the profile of dairy farmers in the community.- A final day at the factory showed students the training pathways into their area of interest in the industry and how to apply for jobs.- Students presented to parents and WCB management and staff about their experience on the program and were presented with certificates by Director Bruce Vallance.-

Through the program, the students have formed great friendships with other students in the group who have similar interests. Charlie has a particular interest in the agribusiness and marketing side of agriculture. -‘Attending the program has given me, as a prospective part of the industry, a great insight and experience in what happens between the production of milk and being turned into a final product’, he says.- -‘I have also met a number of eager, like-minded students with whom I have formed strong relationships over the past few days. I found it a brilliant opportunity to gather contacts in the industry and I hope to keep in touch with them in my future endeavours.’

In the photo Charlie is pictured with WCB Field Officer Rachel Alexander and fellow student Hayley at the Port of Melbourne learning about exports.
