VM students share fascinating history of College Chapel

Old Collegian Gerard Murphy (SPC 1966–1970), pictured above, was the lucky recipient of a morning with our VM students in the tranquil surrounds of our College Chapel as part of their VCE Vocational Major (Personal Development) communications and collaboration project in Term 3.

Gerard listened as the boys spoke eloquently and respectfully, exploring and explaining the religious icons and historical significance of the Chapel, with the help of College Archivist Halina Sztynda.

“It was wonderful to see my research on the History of the Chapel put to good use, as students—both individually and in groups—explored the religious icons and historical significance of the Chapel. Their visit concluded with a tour of the museum space, where they continued to engage with the broader history of the College,” Ms Sztynda said.

“A special acknowledgment goes to Katherine (Swagerman – VET Coordinator), whose outstanding teaching focused on the Chapel as a central element of the religious experience at St Patrick’s College. As these students prepare to become ‘Old Boys’, the Chapel remains a meaningful symbol of their journey.”

As it happened, the Chapel tour co-incided with R U OK? Day.

“The topic of RUOK was thoughtfully introduced, highlighting the enduring bonds formed at St Patrick’s College and the importance of supporting one another through life’s challenges.”

In turn, Gerard shared insights from his diverse career, including his work with Peter Brock on the suspension system for the Commodore V8 Supercars (1980–1981) and generously imparted his knowledge and wisdom with the students.

Thank you to Gerard for helping our VM students to successfully complete their project!
