Headmaster’s Message – March 24, 2017

March 23, 2017

Dear Parents, Carers, Friends and Students of St Patrick’s College,

There have been a number of significant moments this week which have reminded me of what a wonderfully generous and vibrant community we have at St Patrick’s College. In each of these special occasions, I have been acutely aware of students who are freely sharing their God-given talents with others around them. This is, after all, the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice alive today in our school. Through sharing our gifts with the community, we continue to make our school and the world a better place.- When education is seen this way it takes on a far more significant meaning in our lives. It is as much about achieving your very best academically, as it is about becoming the best person you can be – one who considers others before the needs of ourselves. This reminds me of a reflection I read yesterday: -that all we do here today, all that we accomplish, is for the pursuit of truth and for the service of humanity-. Throughout the Gospels, we read often about those times when Jesus called people to be different in the future – to experience a conversion of heart and mind. I think at the heart of this message is his wish for us to be people who, like Edmund, are willing to share of ourselves to bring joy and peace to the world. Through Lent, we have the opportunity to reflect on this call and how we might all experience a -conversion- over the Easter season.

These -moments- I have highlighted include:

The recent Music Camp and concert last Sunday, where parents and friends were treated to a wonderful performance from our Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Senior and Junior Stage Bands.

The Rowing Presentation Dinner where more than 180 rowers, coaches, parents, friends and staff celebrated the successful 2016-17 rowing season. It was a privilege to hear our coaches speak so highly of their crews, and to witness the appreciation of students for those who have given so generously of their time.

The Father/Son evening last Tuesday, where more than 40 dads and carers came together to participate in a conversation about the importance of continuing to develop a strong relationship with their sons, and its significance to their development, particularly in their formative years.

On Wednesday evening over 60 staff, parents and friends attend the formal opening and blessing of the newly completed Whelan Food Technology Centre. Importantly, a number of students shared their cooking skills by preparing, in front of the guests, a number of specialised tasters.

Throughout the week, a number of students and staff ventured out into the local and wider community to provide help and assistance to people in need including in tutoring, reading, the provision of food and through the gift of their company.

Finally, I would like to take a few moments to wish all members of the St Patrick’s College community well for the upcoming holidays. I will be taking a week of leave next week with my family. Stephen Hill will step in to the role of Acting Headmaster for this period of time. May the good news of the Risen Lord fill the hearts of all families with great joy and happiness over the Easter season and may God keep all members of our community safe.

Mr John Crowley
