A Prize in My Heart: A Story about Cyril Kelly, Architect by Stephen Clements was launched at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, yesterday, an especially fitting setting given the College’s enduring connection to Cyril Kelly as the architect of its Chapel. The Chapel is featured on the book’s front cover, underscoring the significance of Kelly’s work to the College’s history and heritage.
The story of Cyril Kelly was carefully researched and documented by Stephen Clements, an Australian architect and architectural historian. Clements graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1974 with a Bachelor of Architecture, specialising in design and architectural history. His professional and scholarly interest in Kelly emerged through his own architectural engagement with Kelly’s buildings, fostering a deep appreciation for Kelly’s contribution to ecclesiastical and educational architecture.

Clements began his career with the Victorian Public Works Department, where he gained valuable experience in the design of institutional buildings. In 1985, he established his own architectural practice, focusing primarily on residential and educational projects distinguished by a thoughtful and practical design approach.
Alongside his architectural practice, Clements has made a notable contribution as a researcher and author. His 2026 publication offers a detailed and considered study of Cyril Kelly’s life and work, helping to restore recognition to an important yet often overlooked figure in Australian architectural history.
The launch of the book at St Patrick’s College brings together the work of both architect and historian within a place shaped by Kelly’s vision. It highlights not only the enduring architectural significance of the Chapel but also the importance of preserving and interpreting its history for future generations.
