  • Fantastic story on Bernie Franklin (SPC 1958-61, PY1963), pictured above, who recently celebrated an astonishing 50 years working for one of Ballarat’s clothing institutions, Messer and Opie, and is still as enthusiastic about fashion and retail as he was when he started in 1969.   • Well done to East Point’s Chris Quinlan (SPC 2005-06) for winning the Ballarat Football League reserves vote count, and Scott Howard (SPC 2000-05) for finishing second for North Ballarat City. Mitch McGrath (SPC 2013-18) came in equal second in the Under 19 competition.   • Sam Short (SPC 2011-16) shone for Melbourne United in their much-anticipated NBL preseason clash with Melbourne Illawarra in Ballarat recently. Sam is loving his time as a professional basketball player, and talks more about it in these stories at this link and this link
  • Great to see Old Boy David Mulraney (SPC 2003-06) raise awareness of how technology can be a risk for victims of family violence in his role as a business owner of Ballarat iPhones, at a public presentation in Ballarat recently co-inciding with White Ribbon Day. To read more, go to this link
  • Old Boys and Bungaree Football Netball Club life members Jayson Frawley (SPC 1986-91) and Darren Rix (SPC 1981-86) were among the life members from the Bungaree Football Netball Club to reflect on the tragic passing of Danny Frawley in this story at this link
  • It was with excitement that the bronze life-size statue of Old Collegian George Devine Treloar (1900) was officially unveiled in Sturt Street, Ballarat, recognising the Old Boy’s enormous humanitarian efforts. To read more, go to this link

  • Austin Murphy (SPC 2004-09) enjoyed one of his most prolific seasons in front of goal for Waubra this year, booting four in the grand final to secure the club’s goal-kicking award. To read more, go to this link

  • The second day of the second Ashes cricket test at Lord’s Cricket Ground recently went red in honour of Ballarat-raised Ruth Strauss, the daughter of Old Collegian and former staff member Peter McDonald (SPC 1962-64) and wife of former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss. The Red for Ruth Day aims to raise funds for the Ruth Strauss Foundation, established by her husband after Ruth’s passing last year from a rare form of lung cancer. To read more, go to this link
